How do I transfer files with a direct connection between two computers?

I need to clone my hard drive, with Clonezilla, on my old computer and copy it temporarily as an image on my laptop. How do I set it up so I can copy it to my laptop with a direct ethernet cable connection between them? Clonezilla can use samba, nfs, ssh. I am a TOTAL noob when it comes to this networking stuff, so if someone could help me hook this up, that would be awesome!

    Thanks.

    Please, help me...

I tried transfering my cloned hard drive with samba over my network, but I kept getting errors, I want to try copying it over with a direct ethernet connection between my computers. How do I set that up? I think i may need to set up a static ip address, but I am not sure.

    I really need help!

I finally got it. This is pretty much a note for myself for future reference. Using the normal samba setup, don't use gzip to compress with Clonezilla, just image it with no compression.
