Weird behavior by broadcom wireless on Dell Studio 1557

I'm using a Dell Studio 1557. Ubuntu 10.04 installed with no hitches, and two proprietary drivers were suggested, one for the Broadcom wireless, and one for the ATI graphics card, which I enabled. Both worked flawlessly, or so I thought. Check out the photo.

I noticed that the network bars in the system monitor applet had constant gaps in them, as if the network throughput would drop to 0 and then go up again. Opening the system monitor I realized this really was the case. Every 40 seconds the throughput drops completely to 0, and then goes up again.

Anyone seen this before? Apart from this, the wireless works pretty well. Also, the wireless seems to have very poor range - but I'm not sure if this is related to this problem or not.

I want to test this on windows as well, to ascertain if its a hardware or software problem, but I don't know of any equivalent tool to do this. Any suggestions?
