    Per the Ubuntu Sound Troubleshooting Wiki, run

    wget -O alsa-info.sh http://alsa-project.org/alsa-info.sh && bash ./alsa-info.sh

    and select Y when it asks you to send the sound card details to the www.alsa-project.org website. It will then tell you the URL with the details; paste the URL here.

    I'm having a similar problem and I was looking at the wiki but then I got lost about a third of the way through but here is "my" link

    Re: No sound ubuntu 10.04

    I should note my sound has been working for about 2 months since I upgraded to Lucid. All of a sudden though it seemed to not work. As you can see per the website link above,

    Code:
    !!ALSA Version
    !!------------

    Driver version:
    Library version:    1.0.22
    Utilities version:  1.0.22
    There is no Driver version. What are some suggestions? Should I go about the regular troubleshooting wiki listed earlier? if so, I'm okay doing that, I will need frequent help.

    Thanks in advance.

    Re-install alsa:
    Using a Terminal="Applications->Accessories->Terminal"
    Code:
    sudo apt-get update
    sudo apt-get upgrade
    Code:
    sudo apt-get purge linux-sound-base alsa-base alsa-utils
    Code:
    sudo apt-get install linux-sound-base alsa-base alsa-utils gdm ubuntu-desktop
    *gdm and ubuntu-desktop usually get taken out in the process, so we add them back*
    Reboot.

    Unfortunately, probably a related issue, anything that has to do with OSS4 doesn't install correctly. What could be going on there? I'm going to continue with the steps you gave me.

    Thanks

    Okay, now I'm rebooting, I'll let you know what happens

    Yes. I edited many times with many different module options the alsa-base.conf (before and after the alsa update)
    This should be working...
    Have you installed either alsa-backports or linuxant driver? If so, uninstall them.
    Next re-install alsa:
    Using a Terminal="Applications->Accessories->Terminal"
    Code:
    sudo apt-get update
    sudo apt-get upgrade
    Code:
    sudo apt-get purge linux-sound-base alsa-base alsa-utils
    Code:
    sudo apt-get install linux-sound-base alsa-base alsa-utils gdm ubuntu-desktop
    *gdm and ubuntu-desktop usually get taken out in the process, so we add them back*
    Reboot.

    That worked, thank you very much! should I still uninstall alsa-backports or linuxant driver? I don't know if i have them or not. I'll check in synaptic.

    Also, as for the OSS4 errors, that bug was already filed in LP. Is there a fix or a thread? I looked in LP and it said it was but I couldn't find it.

    Thanks Again! May the Ubuntu be with you!

    PS: what may have caused this, incidental file corruption?

    Yeah, or bad update. If it's working now don't worry about doing anything else.

    I just turned on my machine again and now it's gone again. I'll do the fix as before, it was easy. Unfortunately, I want a more permanent fix. Let me try uninstalling anything that is oss4 related.

    I removed all the oss4 components except alsa-oss and oss-compat and then ran what your commands in the terminal and that works.

    thanks for your help again!

    Re: No sound ubuntu 10.04

    Why do you want to remove OSS4?
    OSS4 is actually much more stable than ALSA.
    I got my sound problem fixed with some ALSA tweaks, but I made a slight mistake and no more sound.
    So I switched to OSS, and every single application who uses sound works!
    Check the Fix your sound! in my sig.
