    can't access google from ubuntu

I have searched the forums for this problem, but haven't found anything that applied to my situation.

On Ubuntu (Lynx), I can't access www.google.com, www.google.hu, www.google.*, or gmail.com, or 74.125.47.147 from: chromium, arora, firefox, conkeror, or midori. All non-google related websites work fine -- unless they have google ads.

I can't access gmail from sylpheed (my e-mail client either).

    I can ping, however.

I can access all of the above from my laptop, which is running Debian Lenny. Both computers are connected to the same router with cables. my laptop is very old and slow, so while google works on it, browsing the web on it is painful because the computer is ridiculously slow.

The problem is intermittent: sometimes rebooting fixes it, but a few days/weeks later it starts up again.

I use opendns for my dns servers.

all this is from my ubuntu computer:

    Code:
    pthalo@linija:~$ ping google.com
    PING google.com (66.102.9.106) 56(84) bytes of data.

    rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 51.947/54.764/59.301/3.250 ms
    Code:
    pthalo@linija:~$ cat /etc/resolv.conf
    # Generated by NetworkManager

One thread mentioned that the problem was moblock blocking google, but I don't think i have moblock installed -- not sure what it is, but "apropos moblock" turned up nothing. other threads mentioned that non us people were having trouble accessing google sometime in June. I am located in Hungary, but so is my laptop and it's accessing google fine.

I am not using a proxy.

    Code:
    pthalo@linija:~$ traceroute google.com
traceroute to google.com (74.125.127.104), 30 hops max, 60 byte packets

Make sure your connection settings are correct (e.g., Tools -> Options -> Advanced -> Network / Connection -> Settings). Additionally, disable ipv6 on Firefox Preferences, by setting the network.dns.disableIPv6 preference to true.
    1. Type about:config in the address bar, press Enter.
    2. Find network.dns.disableIPv6 in the list.
    3. Right-click -> Toggle.
    4. Restart Firefox and try again.

You can also disable ipv6 on the system. See How to disableIPv6 in Karmic Koala and Lucid Lynx

hurray, that fixed it! I remember disabling IPv6 ages ago on debian, but it didn't occur to me that I hadn't done that yet for ubuntu. thank you for your help!
