I can't believe I read that whole story. It was a decent read for a story, but the punchline ruined it.

Well obviously the punchline is a play on "better late than never"

however, in english, you would pronounce lever as 'leever'

I've heard it both ways, but I pronounce it in a way that rhymes with never.
