How to configure conky for a first timer?

I like all those system informative informations on the desktop through conky, but I don't know how to get it and configure it.

I have fair amount of experience in editing text files - though a little.

Is there a nooby guide but very detailed and systematic somewhere?

I used this thread to copy bits and pieces together the first time I used conky.

After you've made some changes and get a feel for how it works you can start on an original config.
