I was just wondering how much ram is needed(and reccomended) for Ubuntu 10.04. Also, is there a big difference between Ubuntu and Xubuntu on an older computer?

I checked the documentation before I installed and for a notebook it was recommended that you have 512mb. However, I got an old laptop from work, it is a Toshiba satellite pro 6100 with a 1.6Ghz cpu, 256Mb ram, and a 40Gb hard drive. It installed and ran just fine and slow. I upgraded to 1Gb ram and it is a whole lot better. Just go to the documentation section and search for system requirements.
Hopefully this link will answer both questions.

It seems that 1GB of RAM is the best bet. I have an old gateway desktop PC that used to run ubuntu 10.04 and it had 512mb ram. Does anyone think xubuntu would be any better? Thanks.
Here are link about ubuntu and xubuntu requirements:

The differents are just the desktop, Ubuntu is the main distro just with gnome desktop that consume more ram and disk space that xubuntu is the same ubuntu but use xfce desktop.
My Acer has 256mb of RAM and it runs fin with a bit of tweaking. My only issue is that it would not install of a LiveCD or even an AlternateCD I had to update from 9.10 through Update Manager.

If you want stuff done right, do it yourself.
I would recommend at least 1GB of ram.
