Hello,

I have an old laptop I want to give to my grandma for her to use for email and stuff. They only have a phone line so I would like to use the internal modem. "scanModem" says that snc_via82xx_modem or slamr should work.

I tried the guide, especially on Alsa. After going through the steps I got an
Code:
SmartLink modem driver not available for this Kernel.
Error.

Then I tried the part on Smartlink but that did not help gnome-ppp in any way to find the modem. Apparently /dev/modem does not exist, although in one of the guide's steps there was an output stating that there was a link created from /dev/ttyS0 to /dev/modem. I then tried /dev/ttyS0 directly in gnome-ppp, but that resulted in an IO-Error.

Could all that just be because I have no phone cable attached right now or does the modem not work yet?

Can it be fixed somehow? I am really eager to get it running on the great Ubuntu, but that has to work …

Thanks for your time and any—no matter what—clues!
