    Unhappy U_9.10 & Update Manager

    Help please!

I'm using 9.10 and overall have been happy with its performance

A couple of weeks ago a red triangle appeared in the upper panel of the computer notifying me that my updates were outdated. This is my current situation:

    1) When I run the update manager through GUI I get the following:

Failed to fetch cdrom://Ubuntu 9.04 _Jaunty Jackalope_ - Release i386 (20090420.1)/dists/jaunty/main/binary-i386/Packages.gz Please use apt-cdrom to make this CD-ROM recognized by APT. apt-get update cannot be used to add new CD-ROMs

Failed to fetch cdrom://Ubuntu 9.04 _Jaunty Jackalope_ - Release i386 (20090420.1)/dists/jaunty/restricted/binary-i386/Packages.gz Please use apt-cdrom to make this CD-ROM recognized by APT. apt-get update cannot be used to add new CD-ROMs

Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead.

    2) When run "sudo apt-get update" in the terminal, I get the following:

    pavel@pavel-laptop:~$ sudo apt-get update
    [sudo] password for pavel:
    Ign cdrom://Ubuntu 9.04 _Jaunty Jackalope_ - Release i386 (20090420.1) jaunty Release.gpg

I've been searching for a solution to the problem for a couple of weeks now, but it seems every case is slightly different and everthing I've tried so far hasn't worked. ANY HELP WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED!!!!!

It worked! Thanks very much cavh.

Any ideas how it is that the settings changed by themselves? Many thanks again.

Two ways. Either you did it yourself accidentally and didn't realize it or you have a Ghost in the Machine.

No, no, no. Ha! Not a virus. I meant almost literally a Ghost in the Machine. Some computer scientists have theorized that random bits of code can temporarily come together and form what is called an emergent property. They think that sometimes these emergent properties could be considered briefly aware.

I think it was just a fluke. Linux viruses are almost unheard of. Virtually all of the ones that do exist are designed to attack Servers not PC's. If you are concerned you could look into clamav. I don't bother and haven't for the last three years.

emergent properties....well, perhaps one day ubuntu will evolve complex enough that it may indeed achieve at least a semblance of self-awareness / regulation

...afluke or not, still makes you wonder, doesn't it

    cheers
