My ISP just got a 10 GB cap so I want a GUI gauge to tell me my usage for the month , I have tried some but they rely on a static address , which I don't have........ any suggestions ??
I would change ISP but none around ........

I use knemo. It sits in the tray and monitors daily, monthly and yearly throughput. It also looks like the windows networking icon in that it animates when data is being received/sent.
Thanks , but I really don't want to install a bunch of KDE stuff , I was hoping for something for Gnome...
Bump
Have a look at vnstat https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToMonitorInternetTrafficTotals
and using it with conky http://conky.linux-hardcore.com/beginners/programs/using-vnstat/
Here's a simple conky config you could use.
The totals in the pic are all the same because I only just installed vnstat to test it.

vnstat is the way to go I'd say, as the poster above points out.
