I have done everything mentioned in this thread but still do not see the Background image option under the appearance tab for Desktop Cube.
I figured that out. I was more looking for a way to have a different wallpaper in the various workspaces.
In ccsm....Utility/wallpaper, and add your pics, but you can't have icons when you do this.
I have that enabled, and have four different wallpapers loaded in utilities->wallpapers but I can't figure out how to apply a different one to each workspace. I'm just getting back into the Linux world so...

Try this,
Open a terminal, and type "gconf-editor" (without quotes) and hit enter.
The gconf editor will open
Under Apps->Nautilus->Preferences you'll find a checkbox next to "Show Desktop". Un-check this checkbox. click OK and reboot (if needed.)
