Re: HOWTO: migrate wubi install to partition

    oh, what a wonderful morning...
while getting up I saw your reply tried immediately and...
    it worked!!
there was no line to change /dev/sda7 to /dev/sda6,
    it nevertheless bootet into ubuntu.
after sudo update-grub no boot problems anymore.

Are there tutorials to learn about the "inside" of ubuntu and the terminal commands to influence it?

your help was very generous for I knew my problem was a bit off topic of this forum. Thanks.

OK Great. I guess Grub used the UUID instead of /dev/sda7 - I wasn't entirely sure whether the UUID would be changed when Gparted did it's resize. So I guess the only thing required was to update the MBR.

Anyway - bit of a workout - but you got it working in the end!

Regarding learning Ubuntu... not really sure. You can learn a lot from ubuntuforums.org. And google. I don't have a 'Linux Bible' if that's what you're looking for

Im curious , what are the benefits of doing this ? I did the wubi install from win7 and everything seems fine. Ive read that disk performance could be affected by going the wubi route but for me atleast that doesnt seem to be an issue.

Reliability - having everything on a single file is a risk. This can be mitigated by backups. Also lately Grub2 updates have been breaking Wubi booting, which can be a pain for new users to handle.

Support - Wubi is probably used by a minority of Ubuntu users and they tend to be newer - so you won't get as good support. Also developers probably consider Wubi issues lower priority.

I think migration was always intended to be part of Wubi. But there's no reason to rush into it. If you want to keep using Wubi, just make sure you have data backups - and back up the entire root.disk before major updates.

I forgot the last step in Installing the boot loader. I used the automated script.
Ubuntu shows in the boot menu but when I click on it I get this :

    Error: unknown command 'Load Front'
    Error: file not found

So you have the Wubi booting issue - and since you didn't install grub2's bootloader... you can't boot either now. But you have a live CD so I'd just use it to install grub2 (as I described in that other thread) - that will get the migrated install booting.

If you would prefer to fix the Wubi problem, see the Wubi Megathread Problem #2, Solution#1 and then the Permanent Fix after you've booted it.

OK, I was able to boot into my ubuntu with advise from the other thread.
Thank you bcbc very much. Now...how can I get my windows boot loader back because I can only see my Win 7 and not my Vista. Please advise.

Thank you very much again for the quick response.
