Fn + brightness-\brightness+ = shows notification about brightness status (50%), but does not control the intensity of backlight. it's just stuck on 50% and that's all.

I was having this problem, but fixed it.
Under the battery preferences I had it set so that brightness was lower when running on battery power. That setting appears to override the brightness applet. Once I changed the power management preferences the brightness went to where I wanted it.
any other suggestions? cmon guys? don't be so silent! i can't believe that so many people are litterally live in ubuntu and can't even try to help newbies

found an LCD brightness controller:
right button on a panel -> add to panel -> LCD brightness controller. but the problem is this thing DOES NOT DO ANYTHING. what a phukin piece of messed up sheet.
