Desktop Icons Alignment

I have recently switched to Ubuntu from being a long time user of Mac OS X, and so far I'm loving it. Although, one of my biggest gripes is the way GNOME aligns the desktop icons. When I right click the desktop and select "Keep Aligned" there is a very strong source of vertical column alignment of the icons, but it is very much the opposite with horizontal alignment. I was wondering how does one make the alignment grid act more like Windows/Mac OS X?

For example in this screenshot, the icons are all horizontally aligned:

Then here is a screenshot of my desktop, where things are horizontally aligned, but not in the way I would like them to be:

This seems like it should be a simple solution, but I have not been able to find anything on the forums or Google pertaining to what I'm looking for

Try: Right Click -> Clean up by name. Is that what your'e looking for?

Unfortunately no. I'm referring to how if you have multiple rows of icons, it can be difficult to get them aligned correctly. For example:

In Windows/Mac the rows of the desktop are much more rigid and wouldn't allow you to do something like this. It becomes really apparent when I have a column of folders, but the spacing between each is different from the next.

The "keep aligned" setting seems to be strong in the vertical not horizontal.
