Samba & SSH Endless Password Loop

Prior to Karmic I had samba working well. Karmic upgrade broke samba with an endless password loop when trying to connect to a samba server. I have not been able to get it working since, including after upgrade to Lucid. I've now encountered a similar problem attempting to login into an SSH server. Laptop to desktop, (Karmic to Lucid),ssh ok, reverse no joy. (sshd running on both). Could someone point me to a howto or thread that addressed this problem.
