sound not functioning post update

I'm running 10.04 (64bit) on an hp dv6915nr and sound has been working great for the past few weeks. When I started the machine up today, it wouldn't play any sounds and the sound preferences show no input devices. Output devices lists simply "Dummy Output".

The only thing that I believe to have changed recently is updates. I installed a set of updates a day or tow ago. I hadn't used anything requiring sound immediately after the update, so I'm not sure if the updates were the issue.

Any thoughts on how to troubleshoot/resolve the issue are greatly appreciated.

Disregard, the issue magically fixed itself somehow.
