If you want to play 1080p videos, you are best off going with an Nvidia graphics solution. I don't think Intel has video decode acceleration yet on Linux, whereas Nvidia's is quite mature and well-supported.
Without video decode acceleration, on a laptop CPU... you'd need to turn off Compiz, and it probably still won't be fluent. It'll eat your battery life too.
I try to treat the cause, not the symptom. I avoid the terminal in instructions, unless it's easier or necessary. My instructions will work within the Ubuntu system, instead of breaking or subverting it. Those are the three guarantees to the helpee.
