Re: Wired ethernet not getting detected

Sorry for not responding sooner--I was traveling and without an Internet connection.

PaulD475: even though your symptoms are the same as the original poster's, the causes may be different. Please post the output of these commands so we can have a better idea:
    Code:
    ifconfig
    ifconfig -a
    lshw -C Network
    dmesg | grep eth
    lspci -nn

    djschlotte
: I'm not sure exactly what's wrong in your case, because from all of the output you posted, it looks like your wired interface should work. Maybe it's a dumb question, but are you positive that the network you're plugging into grants addresses via dhcp and that you don't need to configure it statically? You could try to request an address manually with:
    Code:
    sudo dhclient eth0
If that works, it will tell you that your interface has received an IP address from your router; otherwise it will time out with a message like "no leases received, sleeping."

It could also hep to see if the output of:

    Code:
    dmesg | grep eth0
    lshw -C Network
    says anything useful.

Re: Wired ethernet not getting detected

I have an Acer AOD260 with the same network hardware as the original poster. I have a dual boot with windows7 & no CD drive. I installed Kubuntu 10.04-netbook from a USB stick that I set up from my desktop computer.

Ethernet controller: Atheros Communications AR8152 v1.1 Fast Ethernet (rev c1)
Network controller: Broadcom Corporation Device 4727 (rev 01)

As a newbie, I am not sure how this works. I did get the file compat-wireless-2.6.tar.bz2 onto my netbook's desktop file.
I have Kubuntu 10.04 - netbook installed. Do I type this code into Konsole & execute one line at a time? I did the first two lines & got what seem to be errors. Does the netbook version have all the required files?

Can I update the Ubuntu 10.04 - netbook that I have on a USB stick the same way as well?

Or is there a way to just install the newest kernel 2.6.34 that has this new driver already?

    (From post #6)
    Code:
    sudo apt-get update
I got ... some index files failed to download ...:
    sudo apt-get install build-essential
    I got ... couldn't find package build-essential:
    cd ~/Desktop
    tar -xjvf compat-wireless-2.6.tar.bz2
    cd compat-wireless*
    scripts/driver-select atl1c
    make
    sudo make install
Then reboot. Hopefully your ethernet will work automatically after reboot; if not, run:
    Code:
    sudo modprobe atl1c
to insert the driver. Let me know how it goes.

We can probably make your wireless work too, if you're interested.[/QUOTE]

I'll worry about the wireless after I get the wired network functioning.

Re: Wired ethernet not getting detected

sls54: the "sudo apt-get" commands aren't working because they expect you to have an Internet connection, and you obviously don't at this time because neither wireless nor wired Internet works. However, if you have an Ubuntu installation CD and a CD drive, you should be able to grab the files you need from there. Put the CD in your drive, then go to System>Administration>Software Sources. Under the "Ubuntu Software" tab, check the box for using your CD as a repository, then press OK. You'll be asked if you want to update your sources list; say yes. It may complain about being unable to download some files; that's alright.

Once the CD has been registered as a repository, type again:
    Code:
    sudo apt-get install build-essential
and it should work this time. With build-essential installed, you can compile the atl1c module from the compat-wireless package using the instructions that you copied below.

If you don't have a CD drive, you can try using the USB stick as a repository but I'm not positive that will work; you may need to have an actual CD. If it doesn't, let me know and we can try another solution.

Or is there a way to just install the newest kernel 2.6.34 that has this new driver already?
I'm not positive which version of the kernel has the module you need, but if you want to try installing a more recent kernel, you can download packages from the Ubuntu kernel PPA. Just download the linux-headers, linux-image and linux-source package for the kernel version you want, transfer them to your Ubuntu computer and double-click them to install (you may need to install them in a certain order; try linux-image first). You'll need to run "sudo update-grub2" after installing the kernel to create an entry for it in your boot menu.

@pytheas22 - Doh! I forgot to delete my post. I figured out after finally tracking down a manual online that I had the Cat5 cable plugged into the wrong spot. Who would have though that a port labeled "Broadband" wouldn't have anything to do with broadband. Thanks for your help and time.

However, there's a driver included in the compat-wireless stack that you can use (I have no idea why they included an ethernet driver in compat-wireless, but according to these emails, someone did).

To download, compile and install the driver, first go to http://linuxwireless.org/download/compat-wireless-2.6 and download the file named "compat-wireless-2.6.tar.bz2" (you can't download it in the terminal because of anti-hotlinking). Save it to your desktop. Then run these commands:
    Code:
    sudo apt-get update

    cd ~/Desktop

I just wanted to confirm this works on my friend's Dell Inspiron with the following lspci

Re: Wired ethernet not getting detected

altonbr: thanks for letting us know it worked Hopefully in Ubuntu 10.10 this will all be sorted out out-of-the-box and no manual installation will be necessary.

(If any of you who own this hardware have tested Ubuntu 10.10 yet, please let us know your experience.)

Re: Wired ethernet not getting detected

I have Toshiba Satellite L655-S5061 laptop. Both wired and wireless adapters don't work; wired adapter doesn't even show up on ifconfig.

I followed the steps mentioned here but still not working. This is what I did, as suggested in various parts in this thread:

    1. hookup a (netgear) wifi usb adapter
    2. perform a full system upgrade
    3. ifconfig only shows two interfaces: loopback and wifi
    4. ran through the steps outlined earlier and shown below:

    • sudo apt-get update
    • sudo apt-get install build-essential
    • cd ~/Desktop
    • tar -xjvf compat-wireless-2.6.tar.bz2
    • cd compat-wireless*
    • scripts/driver-select atl1c
    • make
    • sudo make install

    1. reboot
    2. "lshw -c Network" shows
    3. *-network:0 DISABLED
      description: Ethernet interface
      physical id: 2
      logical name: vboxnet0
      serial: 0a:00:27:00:00:00
      capabilities: ethernet physical
      configuration: broadcast=yes multicast=yes
    4. ifconfig shows
    5. vboxnet0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 0a:00:27:00:00:00
      BROADCAST MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
      RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
      TX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
      collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000
      RX bytes:0 (0.0 B) TX bytes:0 (0.0 B)
    6. So I enabled it ifconfig vboxnet0 up
    7. i rebooted and the adapter became DISABLED again
    8. I re-enabled it but the wired link still not work.

    Any help is appreciated.

Btw, how do you insert textboxes???? I tried to put the output in one of them but couldn't figure it out.

    Thank you
    Michael

Could you please post the output of:
    Code:
    lspci -nn
so we can see exactly which type of ethernet chipset you have? I'm guessing yours is different than the ones dealt with earlier in this thread.

The vobxnet0 interface is for VMware or VirtualBox, not your actual ethernet hardware. That will most likely come up as eth0.

As for creating the text boxes for code, you just insert the code, highlight it and press the button with a # symbol on it in the list of tools directly above the box where you enter text. Alternatively, you can manually apply the code tags as below:

    HTML Code:
    [code]code here[/code]
