need help with Bolnagri in Ubuntu 10.04

    Friends
I am a doctor from Dehradun. I changed the keyboard layout to Bolnagri but when I type "a" as in Amar (the name), I dont get hindi first alphabet "a" on display. Instead I get, a dotted circle folowed by an "I" (like this ा).
Shift+a gives a perfect Hindi "aa" as in Aakaar- like this- आ.
What am I missing here? Will be grateful for any help..

a single 'a' is considered as 'aa ki matra'. Whereas, 'A' is taken as 'aa'. So, to type amar.. u need to press right alt+a, to get 'a' and then m and r as usual. I know it sounds a bit stupid to type 'a', but that's the way it is designed. You can change the key grabbing, though.. but it would just mess up the layout. So, the solution is to press right alt and the key.

You need to enable 3rd Level Key to use those characters.

There are a few characters missing in the keyboard layout for bolnagri. I am attaching 2 png file, one is the current layout and the other is the one with needed characters.
for example the characters above 7 & 8 in the needed.png is missing from the current.png

    current.jpg

so is there any way the current layout can be modified to include the remaining characters?

i would suggest to use the indian keyboard, it is not phonetic but it is more complete and comfortable for prolonged typing, i learnt it in just 3-4 days and now after a year my speed is very good. it is based on indic script so when you learn to type in it, you can type many other indian languages without any extra effort.

once you go the 'bolnagri' way it becomes very hard to learn indic script layout.

    just a suggestion!
