It's best to remove the software via Synaptic. You can search for Gnash/Flash then mark for complete removal then click Apply. You can then re-install Flash via Synaptic. I also highly recommend that you install Medibuntu if you can to watch videos.

BTW, I have found smplayer to work very well with playing videos...give it a try.

Had this issue after upgrading to Ubuntu 11.10 Obnoxious Ogre and could solve it by removing gnash as suggested above (the terminal asked me some questions and I replied yes to all). Then I upgraded flash with the help of a Firefox add-on I had previously installed (before the upgrade) which is Flash-Aid and now You Tube works again properly.

Try resinstalling flash plugins from repo. 10.04 video playback is fine.
