Music creation program on Linux?

I had a program a long time ago I used on Win 98 (can't remember the name) and you could create tracks for each sound by placing the actual notes on measures. Kind of like the Magix Music Maker, but more advanced in that you were creating your own loops note by note.

Is there music maker program available for Linux?

Can't vouch if it is exactly what you are looking for, but these should suit most needs for audio production.

Have a search/read around on the forums etc.

Jokosher is an easy one to use. The most "GarageBand" like. I have used it many times to produce late night classic w/ my friends.

Try out LMMS for simple audio production.

I'll second that: LMMS

it's very fruity-loops. lots of (included) samples for instruments/loops, and you can (i think) use your own sounds for loops or drum sounds if you want. you can control synth plugins from it as well - fun...

for serious multitrack audio recording:
Ardour. you must have jack running first (audio backend). it's like an open-source pro-tools - very powerful!

Traverso. also powerful, just less daunting. elegant interface, and it'll run with or without jack.

ps, 64studio looks very inactive at the moment - be careful. i'd look at ubuntustudio or av-linux. you don't have to have a realtime kernel for audio, so if your regular ubuntu is happy, stay with that, or get a separate box/hdd for a recording-only OS

I know it is rather behind the scenes, but last update was 21-May-2010 13:35. That being the 3.3 alpha2 release. (On their website, they have only announced the 3.0beta3 release though).

I see they have also departed from Debian...


And I enjoyed using EnergyXT in the time I was given to play about with it.
