installing new python, keep orig as default

on a few servers i need to install python3. Even on a desktop of mine.
I've tried a few commands to make python2.6 or 2.5 (depending on the system) the default but still when other packages compile and use python they are hitting version 3 and throwing warnings.

What am i missing to use python3 for my scripts just by calling it explicitly, "python3" yet have the system still use its default python version?
