Anyone else think that AVG free should be put into repos?

Just to give people that dont use Linux or Macs some protection when we forward them emails and stuff that we have received from someone else using a Windows system?
We do preach security so why not help the poor buggers out i guess?
Not sure about their Linux versions but they seem to update the Windows ones pretty often and they dont support previous versions very long so by having it in the repos just makes it so much easier to keep up to date.

I think having the option to install it might be particularly attractive to businesses that use Ubuntu/Linux and deal with clients that use Windows systems.

I've got mixed feelings on this one, even though I like AVG.

In the past people were running into problems with AVG because they forgot to read the instructions and ran into problems because they didn't realize that they needed to add users to the AVG group. The result was a lot of strange and unnecessary advice from well-intentioned people who hadn't read the program documentation either.

More recently I've seen users get into strife because they found it hard working out what to run from the command line. Again, I've seen some strange advice.

There is an AVG rescue disk available: http://www.avg.com/us-en/avg-rescue-cd

It may be OK for some people, but part of the reason I love linux is the fact I don't need anti-virus. Don't care either way whether or not it's in the repos. Easy enough to get if you want it.

Email viruses are almost non-existent these days, and the malware included in dodgy downloads bypass/disable av-scanners. The only reason anyone should run av-scanners on a Linux variant, is if they are running a mail server, AVG free is not the tool for that.

What does AVG free have that ClamAV does not?

I only ask because, though I use AVG free on my Windows machines (cuz ClamAV for Windows kinda sux from a GUI standpoint), I cannot see ever using it on Linux. I use ClamAV on my Linux server and my Mac desktop. I only installed it on my Mac because I wanted to try it. It was not invasive in any way so I kept it for protection against spreading email or SMB viruses to my Windows boxes and my co-worker's Windows systems.

I see no reason why it couldn't be in the repos, but it should never be included by default.

Saw some BS report that the majority of viruses emanated from linux mail servers compared to windows, and as a product clam-av is dreadful. Thoughts??
