Unhappy 10.04 -Sound and video devices not working

I have Ubuntu 10.04 dual booted with Windows XP.
Both systems are working well with the exception of sound in Ubuntu.
The mic simply will not work (works perfectly with XP) and the output sound is scratchy. Finally the video cam we use for Skype calls does not function at all in Ubuntu.
Any thoughts on where to start.
I'd prefer to use Ubuntu for Skype.

Re: 10.04 -Sound and video devices not working

IS this an upgrade or fresh install?
Can you post the output of these terminal commands for me please:
    Code:
    uname -a
    aplay -l
    cat /proc/asound/version
    head -n 1 /proc/asound/card*/codec#*
    Terminal="Applications->Accessories->Terminal"
Also helpful is the make/model of your PC/Laptop.
Please post text output using code tags (the # in toolbar)

This is a Dell Dimension 4400 desktop
Fresh clean install of 10.04. Everything else works great (except for Nexxtech Webcam which is a secondary issue for me)

It is a dual boot system and in XP (and formerly Breezy Badger) the sound works well. Everything is plugged in and I have checked and double checked the setting to see that nothing is muted or anything. There is no input to the mic and the sound (other than the startup sound) is scratchy with a lot of feedback noise - playing CDs, mp3s or Skype.

    I do appreciate your help.

Re: 10.04 -Sound and video devices not working

    How about this one:
    Code:
    head -1 /proc/asound/card0/codec97#0/ac97#0-0
Check your sound levels in a mixer to make sure they're not too high.
    Alsamixer
    Using a Terminal="Applications->Accessories->Terminal"
    Code:
     alsamixer
Press <F6> to select the correct soundcard.
Press <F3> to show playback levels. <F4> selects capture levels [or use <Tab>]
Use the left/right arrow keys to select and up/down arrow keys to change levels. <M> to mute/unmute.

    Gnome-alsamixer
    Using Alt+F2 run dialog
    Code:
     gnome-alsamixer
Use 'Edit -> Sound Card Properties' menu to enable elements.
Soundcard tab to select / adjust levels.

    Interesting. How about this:
    Code:
    lsmod | grep snd
