    Mental health

This is the thread i am talking about.

    http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1487891

    Mental health problems can kill.

Should moderators on a linux internet support forum understand that? No

Should they be trained to know that? No

Should a linux internet support forum be a place to cry for help, if you have a mental problem? No

Should threads about personal mental problems be closed on a linux internet forum? Yes.

Should users who understand mental health issues get involved? Yes, privately.

Mental health problems kill. Do not misunderstand that.

Is the OP crying for help or is he just a bit p***ed. Who knows. All I know is 2 out of the 3 I knew died, and the one that didn`t.......was forced into medical help.

Not a suitable post for ubuntu forums probably.

    Nevertheless, it`s the truth.

I know it is not the place for this, but I would hate for it to happen. As Ubuntu becomes more popular the chances become greater.

So, what`s my point? I don`t have one really.

Should UF as a linux support forum worry about mental health? no

Should UF as a community worry about mental health? yes
    My thoughts.

    Re: Mental health

And as I`ve just realised, this is the point.

Do not expose people with mental problems to people on a linux forum. They need real help.

I see now that you did the right thing.

    Sorry.

    Re: Mental health

Seems you got this sorted out.

We usually close the thread in question and offer assistance, primarily by providing links to mental health services, to the OP in private. It varies case by case, as it should.

Yes, as staff, we are concerned. But we like to give people privacy if we can, no need to air all this on a public forum.

Closing a thread is thus not the same thing as a lack of concern or support.
There are two mistakes one can make along the road to truth...not going all the way, and not starting.

    Re: Mental health

nothingspecial, as far as I am aware, we have never let such discussions run on UF. It is our general policy to redirect these people to other internet resources or a medical/professional help close to them.

In case you were not subscribed to the other thread on the same subject or did not see it, I have removed the Cafe thread. Not only we do not wish to swim in these waters, there is no use keeping such threads around. Might encourage other ones..

    Re: Mental health

As I put in my second post. Having thought about it I realised the policy was correct.

It`s just a subject a little close to the bone at the moment, that`s all.

    Cheers.
