Microsoft Comfort Optical Mouse 3000 Middle Button

My trusty Dell mouse gave up the ghost recently and I replaced it with a Microsoft Comfort Optical Mouse 3000.
Lovely mouse but with one problem I can't seem to fix.
The middle button click that I use constantly to open new tabs in Firefox works only occasionally.
I exchanged the mouse thinking it faulty but the problem persists.
Has anyone encountered this before and found a fix?
The OS is Ubuntu Lucid 10.04.

I have returned the item as not fit for purpose.
Googling the mouse, it seems a common problem with the wheel (button 2) not registering a click event, the 'angle' of the force applied being quite critical.
I would not recommend this mouse for use with Ubuntu.

Same here. Perfect experience in Windows (dual boot... oh, sorry, i said the W-word). Yet it's a struggle to use in Kubuntu 10.10 (especially with my RSI). Would be glad if anyone points me to the solution to this - presumably other than buying Logitech.
