Exclamation I/O error and something about media drive AND remapping sectorsys

Hey, could use a little help
my computers a dell latitude d520 (yep...i know...) and its continually breaking down its like it wants to get thrown out - anyway, recently, i shut down ubuntu one day, and then when i went to start it up again it was like giving me loads of lines of code that was like something along the lines of I/O error, and media drive not found - i kept turning it on and off until it did diskcheck, and that said that it couldnt mount the tmp directory.

and it says something about a block and buffers and stuff which are to do with the harddrive i believe - i got the ubuntu live cd im just about to run gparted and erase everything and do a fresh install, hopefully that will do something - but if not then kindly heeelp lol
