    lucid lynx window manager??

since i upgraded to lucid lynx, ubuntu boots up without a window manager running... how do i fix this?

    this is what was happening:
    - chrome cant be resized even if the maximize button is pressed
    - firefox doesnt have any minimize/maximize, etc. buttons.. it just opens and is fixed in size (in fact that whole title bar at the top is missing)
    - the "show desktop" button comes back with an error that says that there is no window manager running

Wow! that's pretty odd. At least, it's the first time I know of such a behavior. Try opening a terminal and running:
    Code:
    gnome-session
    What happens then?
Bad command. Bad, bad command! Sit! Stay! Staaaaay!!!.

You can also check your startup applications configuration and see if nothing important has been disabled. The window is located under your preference menu, or you can simply run:
    Code:
    gnome-session-properties
Another application I like for checking startup services and applications is Bootup-Manager. If you want to check it out
    Code:
    aptitude install bum
After installation, it will be available under your Administration menu.

    Kind regards!

    Re: lucid lynx window manager??

Thanks for the post. Bootup Manager did the trick, for me.
Launched and clicked on Advanced settings and selected the Services tab.
Enabled gdm and dbus, applied and restarted.
No issues now with browsers, control of application windows, display desktop...

    Re: lucid lynx window manager??

I had the same problem, but wanted to get to the root of it rather than patching over.

I tracked down the source of the gnome-session[<...>]: WARNING: Could not launch application '<...>.desktop': Unable to start application: Failed to execute child process "<...>" (No such file or directory) errors.

Those .desktop files are most likely in ~/.config/gnome-session/saved-session, from a previously saved session (before upgrading to Lucid?). They should be removed (or the whole directory).

Just thought I'd post for the benefit of anyone else who came across this.

Thank you, I had the same problem and deleting files in saved-session helped me.
