Re: Failed to load NVIDIA kernel module!

Back to the "Failed to load the NVIDIA kernel module" error at startup.

Current driver is installed and loaded, nvidia-settings still errors.

Attached is terminal dump & screenshot of synaptic, & "sudo nvidia-settings"

Installing nvidia-common brought back the nvidia-173-modaliases and nvidia-96-modaliases. Also apt reports dkms is no longer needed.

    davin@davin-pc:~$ sudo apt-get install nvidia-common
    Reading package lists... Done
    Building dependency tree
    Reading state information... Done
The following packages were automatically installed and are no longer required:
    dkms
Use 'apt-get autoremove' to remove them.
The following extra packages will be installed:
    nvidia-173-modaliases nvidia-96-modaliases
The following NEW packages will be installed:
    nvidia-173-modaliases nvidia-96-modaliases nvidia-common
0 upgraded, 3 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
Need to get 0B/52.2kB of archives.
After this operation, 344kB of additional disk space will be used.

apt-get doesn't have reinstall as an option, so I removed and installed nvidia-current-modaliases.

Haha, reinstall is for aptitude My bad

Im sorry man, but im out of ideas. I hope someone else will come along with an idea so that I can learn (and of course so your system works). The only things I can think of is:
    1) Its a driver or kernel bug relating to your specific card
    2) Something got messed up upgrading from 9.10.

I would suggest possibly posting a thread in these forums and perhaps they can tell you what is going on:
    http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/forumdisplay.php?f=14

You can also post the results (in a set of code tags please) of:
    Code:
    sudo gedit /var/log/dmesg
so that people can see what, if anything, it says relating to the nvidia module. Good luck and sorry I couldnt be more help..

Re: Failed to load NVIDIA kernel module!

I think I'm ready to give in. Can anyone point me to a guide to clean install without destroying /home and /usr? Everything is on the same partition...i didn't know how to config the parts when I installed 9.10

Well, you could do the /home part if you have enough free hard drive space. Load a liveCD and resize (using gparted partitioner) the Ubuntu partition down to about 10GB or so. Take the remaining space and format it in ext4.

Then, you will need to mount the partitions (look for some info on mounting) and do the copying between them (just copy your user folder located in /home to the new partition). Then, when you install 10.04, just point the partitioner at the newly created partition (with the data you copied over) and set it as /home for the mount point.

Re: Failed to load NVIDIA kernel module!

    Sorry I can't help..

However I do have EXACTLY the same issue as you, but with 10.4 (64bit). Exactly the same error message tried all three drivers including the recommended one!!

    I'm using Nvidia 8800GTS 640MB card

Loosing the will to live with this...
