Upgrade to 10.04, loss of reliable internet

10.04 installed over pre-existing Karmic. My connection is hosed, everything else seems to be working fine.

This happened with an older version being upgraded to 9.something a while back too, that was on a different machine but the symptoms are the same. Internet connectivity comes and goes, some sites are impossible to load, others are reluctant, partial loads, etc.

Not a computer scientist here, is there something wrong with my method?

The modem and switch are fine (using them now on a different machine).

Edit, directing DNS server to 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 sorted the sporadic connectivity out.
