    My first guess would be that you don't have the codecs. Assuming you are in Xubuntu currently, go to synaptic and get "xubuntu restricted extras"

    Also search "gstreamer plugin ugly;" not exact name but can't remember what exact name is.

    Open up your software sources (System>Administration>Software Sources) and make sure you enable all repositories except pre-released updates and let it reload.

    Open up a terminal and paste in the following:

    Code:
    sudo wget http://www.medibuntu.org/sources.list.d/`lsb_release -cs`.list --output-document=/etc/apt/sources.list.d/medibuntu.list; sudo apt-get -q update; sudo apt-get --yes -q --allow-unauthenticated install medibuntu-keyring; sudo apt-get -q update && sudo apt-get install w32codecs totem-mozilla libdvdcss2 libxine1 libxinerama1 libxine1-all-plugins libxine1 libxine1-ffmpeg libdvdnav4 libdmx1 libdvdread4 gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly && sudo /usr/share/doc/libdvdread4/install-css.sh
    Once it's done, you should be good to go with pretty much all video.

    you did it again ubunturooster, installed the plugins via synaptic. I thought it was installed the first time i openned video player because it asked me to download the plugins then it installed it but when i looked at synaptic none of the plugins are installed (gstreamer plugin-ugly and bad) thanks, seems you have all the answers for my problem thanks again.

    yes, but i didn't notice he was 64bit. In that case where it says w32codecs it should be changed to w64codecs.
