    Adjusting screen brightness?

On desktops screen brightness is usually adjusted via buttons (real buttons I mean, not drawings of a button) under the screen. Mine has a menu for light, contrast, etc.

Is there any way to access these settings on a laptop via software? My screen is too bright for my taste, and lovering the light woud make the battery last longer, too.

    bump
The result of the "make" command:
    - Sitting bored in front of a computer
    - Watching abstruse output scrolling upwards too fast to be read
    - And waiting for something to go wrong
