Script must be in your HOME dir but now it has root privilegees, that's all. Now you have use root:

    cd ~
    sudo chown YOUR_NAME.YOUR_NAME gnome-shell-build-setup.sh
    and then
    cd ~
    /bin/bash gnome-shell-build-setup.sh
And don't write inside the same post - there's mess!!!

Great, I'm gone for the weekend and the new UI comes out. Well as 10.10 was released today, it'll probably have to wait until the Natty Narwhal Testing and Discussion forum
If the only reason you think your software is better is because it's FOSS, you need to write better software

That appeared to go ok ..... but had to run it as root ..... (if not root it would fail to create it)
    Code:
    keith@keith-laptop:~$ curl -O http://git.gnome.org/browse/gnome-sh...build-setup.sh
% Total % Received % Xferd Average Speed Time Time Time Current

I Guess I should not proceed beyond here ...... as it fails ....

So what should be happening here > ?
Now there's a file 'gnome-shell-build-setup.sh' in your HOME dir and it has ROOT privilegs!!! Delete this file and download gnome-shell-build-setup.sh again using curl and your KEITH (I guess) user.
I think ... I'm done. Now read again 3-4 last pages ... there's enough knowledge to do this very easy.

Ok I have to get out of the habit of running as root ...... sorry ....

I will delete that script file and run it as normal user ....

    keith@keith-laptop:~$ curl -O http://git.gnome.org/browse/gnome-sh...build-setup.sh
% Total % Received % Xferd Average Speed Time Time Time Current

    keith@keith-laptop:~$ /bin/bash gnome-shell-build-setup.sh
    Updating jhbuild ... done
    Installing jhbuild...
    Writing ~/.jhbuildrc ... done
PATH does not contain /home/keith/bin, it is recommended that you add that.

    Done.
    keith@keith-laptop:~$

Ok jhbuild is working now ...... hopefully we are there ..... cheers for sticking with it ..... ty

    Clean up that mess.
    cd ~
    sudo rm -rf gnome-shell
    then
    export PATH=$PATH:/home/keith/bin
    cd ~
    jhbuild build
when you will get the error about libgio (step 22) ... you know the rest.

    Re: GNOME Shell Testing

best to wipe gnome-shell jhbuild and everything you did as root and start from the beginning as a normal user . anything you did as root will be owned by root and not writable ( and maybe not even accessible ) as a normal user .
if it ain't broke you haven't tweaked it enough

    Re: GNOME Shell Testing

Ok will do that ...... fresh clean install again is easiest but I will remove the existing as you say and try it first ....
and no using root .... other than to delete the mess that I created ..... will do it as sudo

    Code:
I just needed these too - but this was just to get by my errors .....
    { sudo apt-get install jhbuild libjasper-dev libdconf0 }
Building from source is a bit more complicated than the GNOME instructions say. So fire up a terminal
    1. sudo apt-get install curl libtiff4-dev libgstreamer0.10-dev libcroco3-dev xserver-xephyr xulrunner-dev python-dev mesa-utils mesa-common-dev libreadline5-dev libgl1-mesa-dev libwnck-dev librsvg2-dev libgnome-desktop-dev libgnome-menu-dev libffi-dev libgtk2.0-dev libgconf2-dev libdbus-glib-1-dev gtk-doc-tools gnome-common git-core flex bison automake build-essential icon-naming-utils
    2. curl -O http://git.gnome.org/browse/gnome-sh...build-setup.sh
    3. /bin/bash gnome-shell-build-setup.sh
    4. Get jhbuild (not a command line entry)

    5. jhbuild build

ok this bit I missed before ....

    Code:
    export PATH=$PATH:/home/keith3/bin
    cd ~
    jhbuild build
    Thanks again ,

Ok getting there .... back on it ..... cleared it all out and created
a New User ..... doing it this way now ....

ok this is going slowly but surely on the laptop ..... the desktop will get the same treatment if this works ok

8/23 gtk3 went in ok for me ....
    9/23 librsvg ok
    10/23 gtk engines 3 ok
    11/23 json-glib ok
    12/23 clutter ok
    13/23 gconf ok
    14/23 mutter ok
    15/23 gjs ok
    16/23 vala ok
    17/23 dconf ok
    18/23 gnome desktop 3 ok
    19/23 gsettings desktop schemas ok
    20/23 gnome icon theme ok
    21/23 icon theme symbolic ok
    22/23 gnome shell failed ..........

so now to the step to clean it out and remove the library

    Code:
      CC test_theme-test-theme.o
      CCLD test-theme

Ok 23/23 success ....... lets run it now .....

Ok found this Bug report and a solution I think

This bug can be fixed by installing libdconf0 from experimental.
It seems that this dependency is currently missing.

    Code:
    keith3@keith-laptop:~$ gnome-shell --replace
    Starting dconf-service...

Ok I have it running now and its the exact same version I have already previously had running ..... where is the applications tab ? ....

    SCREENSHOT LINK

So to completely get it uptodate do I do this now ?

    jhbuild build
    1. Remove or backup old GS
    Quote:
    rm ~/gnome-shell/source/gnome-shell -rf
    2. it's important to cd into right place
    Quote:
    cd ~/gnome-shell/source/
    3. Get the latest overview-relayout branch
    Quote:
    git clone git://git.gnome.org/gnome-shell -b overview-relayout
    4. Build overview-relayout branch: make sure that other modules are ok (traditional 'jhbuild build' is done without errors) - below we are only compiling last gnome-shell modulset)
    Quote:
    jhbuild buildone -n gnome-shell -f
And we've got this awesome GS - this is mine GS
    Ok so Step one .....

    1. Remove or backup old GS ..... ok backup sounds good at this point .... don't burn our bridges ...

    I think I will archive GS source into another directory .... {
    ~/gnome-shell/source/ }

OK now have Gnome-Shell Archive , so next step ....

    rm ~/gnome-shell/source/gnome-shell -rf
    cd ~/gnome-shell/source/
    git clone git://git.gnome.org/gnome-shell -b overview-relayout
    jhbuild buildone -n gnome-shell -f

If you ever happen to want to link against installed libraries
in a given directory, LIBDIR, you must either use libtool, and
specify the full pathname of the library, or use the `-LLIBDIR'
flag during linking and do at least one of the following:
       - add LIBDIR to the `LD_LIBRARY_PATH' environment variable
         during execution
       - add LIBDIR to the `LD_RUN_PATH' environment variable
         during linking
       - use the `-Wl,-rpath -Wl,LIBDIR' linker flag
       - have your system administrator add LIBDIR to `/etc/ld.so.conf'

See any operating system documentation about shared libraries for
more information, such as the ld(1) and ld.so(8) manual pages.

I have a full Archive now of all the source files and directories .....
so now it should not be too difficult to update .....

    ___________________________

    Onward .......

Used it for a couple if hours now .

    Its excellent for organising windows.

Now when I go to desktops without it ....

    I miss it ......

Ok if you run docky with it ..... this is good ..... conky works ok too ........

There would be a video here too .... but still having problems uploading
    ogv files to You-Tube
Imageshack does not want to know ..... guess I will need to convert it ,

Top left for the Gnome-Shell will not work with gtk-recordmydesktop ... at the moment ...
ALT key opens Gnome-Shell window ... so have now got a video .....

A bit glitchy at the moment though ....

    Still working on it .....
