    Firefox images look ugly

A buddy of mine is trying Ubuntu (Karmic) and is reporting that images under Firefox don't look as crisp as they did in Firefox under Windows.

It's an HP Pavilion with a Geforce 8500 GPU.

I walked him through installing the latest driver from NVIDIA. No improvement.

Then I had him upgrade to 3.6.3 via ubuntuzilla. No improvement.

I then had him install Chromium. Suddenly images look great.

I'm out of ideas. I guess Chromium might be a "solution" but I'm not understanding why Firefox is having a problem here. I've been using Ubuntu since 8.10 and I've never seen what he's describing.

See this is one small reaosn why ubuntu is not ready.

If simple bugs happen like this to random people, how in the heck would it make it primetime.

The fix to this should be simple though.

change his font rendering to the one for lcds. I also suggest looking here to see if this fixes it - http://www.videohelp.com/forum/archi...s-t257293.html

You might want to first try pressing Ctrl-0 (or select View/Zoom/Reset Zoom from the menu) to reset the zoom settings.

Recent versions of Firefox scale both text and images by default when zoomed, and that will of course reduce image quality. If the zooming is done on purpose then it might be a good idea to just increase the font sizes from preferences, or at least set the zoom to only apply to text (View/Zoom/Only Zoom Text).

That was it. I'd never seen it because I always had FF set to only zoom text and used an extension to zoom images separately. Thanks.
