Yikes - Where do I find "Settings"?

Yes, I'm a total newbie. Just installed ubuntu yesterday. And I've been reading a lot that involves me doing something in the 'Settings', but I can't, for the life of me, find that in the ubuntu desktop (default, for the time being at least). Please, can someone help me? (it's probably just there in front of me, and I'll be beating myself up when I actually find it, but still...)

In the top panel there is : Applications | Places | System
    (in the left corner)

Click on System the drop-down menu shows "Administration" and "Preferences".

I guess thats what you are looking for.

But if you tell us what you are trying to do, we might be able to help better.

    Welcome by the way

There isn't a master 'settings', what are you trying to do.

For a newbie, the most friendly way to change settings is to go to the menu item System / Control Center.

Welcome to a whole new world...

Are you talking about system settings or application preferences ?

Give us the context to what you are talking about / trying to accomplish.

Bredman is right. I suspect that you have just migrated from *******. The Control Center is similar to Windows Control Panel. You'll find it helpful.

You think telling a new user to go to System > Control Center is helpful ?

Re: Yikes - Where do I find "Settings"?

It's probably the System Settings I'm looking for. Oh, and I can't find anything like 'Preferences' under 'System'... Or the 'Configuration Editor' (could be helpful, good to know anyway I guess, but can't see it there - I'll check Help - which I've checked about a few things til now, but still...

Oh, and the configuration editor, where is that? Also good to know / explore anyway, I guess. Yes, I've just come from *******, it's a whole new, wondrous and strange world for me here...

(And I'm female, BTW, cap10Ibraim - I'd say that's why I'm asking stupid questions, but I'm pretty sure there are lots of girls around, who know what they're doing)

Thanks a million to all of you, just for trying, and for putting up with my questions. It's a general one, and I really don't remember why I was looking for it. It's probably something that I tried to install - VLC media player for Linux? - which said I had to write something in Settings... Still haven't installed it, but I'm not giving up
