Okay,
so maybe this is a laptop specific issue.
Did you try "i915.modeset=1"?
Good luck!

Will do when I get the chance.
Nice thing about Unetbootin is that to boot up you hit Enter to get into the default (USB drive) boot loader, and then hitting "Tab" gets you right into the bootup command.
Somebody else, who has a Dell D400 just like me, said to set the modeset to "1" instead of the "0" mentioned in most places. If I can go into the boot menu and save it with this change, that will make things easier (I have 3 hard drives for this laptop ).Code:i915.modeset=1
Either way I'll post my results in case anybody else runs across this issue too.

Ok, I did some more testing and it seems that using i915.modeset=1 on the boot line works just as well as the other stuff I posted (except it took slightly longer to get to the desktop I think).
It seems there is a solution then for all tastes.
Hope this was useful.
I haven't done extensive testing, but initially it works. It booted up!

I started out using the i915.modeset=1 kernel option on my D400 but found that every so often X would crash and try (unsuccessfully) to restart in low res mode.
The only fix that's proved robust for me was upgrading to a mainline kernel - kernel version in sig.
Not the most elegant of solutions but it's working very well for me and has proved to be very stable so far.

Oh well, when I tried playing the sample video that came with the Live session, it crashed on me. Maybe the newer kernel will work with that too.
I'm just surprised it has gotten this far already. I mean, it's gotten this far and with Fedora coming out in less than 2 weeks, it will be interesting to see if they address this or not.

Just noticed that there's a kernel update in the list of updates when Update Manager popped up this morning.
I'm thinking my system will revert to the kernel version in the update, so I'll report back and let you know how things go.

Glad you got things moving forward (sort of) Dragonbite. I have decided to stick with Karmic for the time being and wait to see what will happen once the first major bugs have been taken care of. Personally, I see no reason to rush into Lucid, especially since Karmic is supported until April 2011.
Good luck!
Update....
The new kernel in this morning's update didn't help at all.
As well as the mainline kernel I have these two listed in grub:
2.6.32-21
2.6.32-22
Neither of them will allow my laptop to boot into X without the "i915.modeset=1" kernel option.

Uubuntu 12.04
I've also got this problem while booting the live cd.
I could boot only with "xforcevesa". After install, the same.
So I tried to install a different kernel 2.6.33 from ppa. For my surprise verything works like a charm! http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa....6.33.3-lucid/
Try it!
