Incomplete installation leaves my synaptic broken!

Hi,
I was installing a package from terminal using sudo apt-get install command, and i wanted to stop the installation. So i closed it. Now when i try to install anything its not allowing me to. Evening after restart. Its say cant get exclusive lock!

tried

dpkg --configure -a

what is that i can do? And what is the method of stopping installation clean?
