10.04 - Xorg Crash: Video device settings could not be detected correctly

    Hi there,

After upgrading to 10.04, Xorg has begun unexpectedly crashing in the middle of a session.

I will be using the computer for a while without problems, usually several hours, until X crashes and returns with a message saying the screen, graphics card, and input device settings could not be detected correctly. None of the remedial options presented in the dialog solve the problem, but I can return to a session in a lower screen resolution. I can start a new session without any problems by rebooting (but not by restarting gdm) until it happens again sometime later.

I have a basic, if perhaps slightly old, Intel video card:
    Code:
      *-display
           description: VGA compatible controller
           product: 82915G/GV/910GL Integrated Graphics Controller
           vendor: Intel Corporation
           physical id: 2
           bus info: pci@0000:00:02.0
           version: 04
           width: 32 bits
           clock: 33MHz
           capabilities: pm bus_master cap_list rom
           configuration: driver=i915 latency=0
           resources: irq:16 memory:fbe00000-fbe7ffff ioport:cc00(size=8) memory:d0000000-dfffffff(prefetchable) memory:fbdc0000-fbdfffff
    My xorg.conf:
    Code:
    Section "Device"
    	Identifier	"Configured Video Device"
    	Driver "intel"
    	VendorName	"Intel Corporation"
            BoardName "82915G/GV/910GL Integrated Graphics Controller"
    	BusID "PCI:0:2:0"
    EndSection

    Section "Monitor"
    	Identifier	"Configured Monitor"
    	Modeline "1280x1024_60.00" 108.88 1280 1360 1496 1712 1024 1025 1028 1060 -HSync +Vsync
    	Option	"PreferredMode" "1280x1024_60.00"
    EndSection

    Section "Screen"
    	Identifier	"Default Screen"
    	Monitor "Configured Monitor"
    	Device "Configured Video Device"
    	SubSection "Display"
    		Depth 24
    		Modes "1280x1024_60.00" "1024x768" "800x600"
    	EndSubSection
    EndSection
Without these settings, Ubuntu won't detect the appropriate resolution for my screen.

The "Monitor Preferences" control doesn't seem to recognize any of these settings.

After a crash, the only error in the console and log file reads "failed to submit batchbuffer: input/output error".

I can't duplicate the problem on demand because it's so sporadic, but it's happened four times so I figure it's not going away.

Any thoughts on how to solve this?

Re: 10.04 - Xorg Crash: Video device settings could not be detected correctly

So far every time it's happened I've been browsing Firefox, but that may just be because I spend more time in Firefox than anything else on my computer.

I know I haven't nailed X since there's also some brief flickering business while the desktop loads after logging in from GDM.

What's weird is that it will work perfectly for a long time and then crash. All the problems with X I've had in the past have been all-or-nothing kinda things.

Can anyone see errors in my configuration? The periodic crashes persist.

You can try upgrading your intel driver by enabling the X-Updates PPA:
    Code:
    sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates
    sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade

Re: 10.04 - Xorg Crash: Video device settings could not be detected correctly

This sounds like one of the typical xserver-xorg-video-intel bugs. Others involve having to use the vesa driver (and possibly being stuck with 640x480 resolution).

You may find some specific workarounds for your chip in the bug reports on Launchpad.

I'm affected by something similar on my EeePC 900. I have added
    Code:
    i915.modeset=0
to grub. Others have had success with
    Code:
    i915.modeset=1

Darn, that's kinda what I feared. Thanks so much.

If you are affected by a bug, then it could be helpful to either file a new one (apport-bug xserver-xorg-video-intel) or subscribe to an existing one and add your comments. You will be in good company!

I reported the bug at Launchpad:

    https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...el/+bug/582057

I realized that the crashes seemed unpredictable because they only occurred after resuming from suspend. Hopefully it'll be a quick fix.

I have exactly the same problem here. NearlyALaugh, did one of the mentioned solutions work for you?

Re: 10.04 - Xorg Crash: Video device settings could not be detected correctly

Hmm, when I did apt-get upgrade earlier this week, appearently something was updated which made X not load at all anymore. I solved the problem by downgrading to Ubuntu 9.04 which, so far, seems to cause no problem at all.
