I could not have the screen saver turned on because it locks up the computer every time it wakes up.

System->Preferences->Screensaver. Untick the box that says "Lock the screen when screensaver is activated" or something similar.

Maybe Canonical should start charging people for their effort. Paying for the right to use a product is not robbing the customers. The problem is not that MS is charging way too much it is that their system is not secured. I bet that if there is no virus problem there would not be much Windows bashing going on regardless of the cost for MS OS. You see...Apple OS is much more expensive than MS yet there is much less Apple bashing going on.

This is not the problem, Ubuntu is a linux distro that strives on community contribution and global efforts, charging for the OS would go against its principles. More reading here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ubuntu_%28philosophy%29

yes, One would think there would be some angry people if that was the case.

I wonder how soon Canonical would blow them all out of the water if they took as much money from people as MS and apple..

So, windows has alll that $$$$$$$... they rob people constantly...
yet they still cannot get their %$#& right.
    niiice.

How does Canonical pay for the development of Ubuntu? The cost must not be insignificant. I am sure there are many software engineers that work on these projects. I do not see any advertisements either...so where do they get the money?

Done that...did not solve the problem. The only way that seems to work so far is to select "Flying Ubuntu Icon" in the screen saver. Selecting anything else will lock up the computer.

Huh? Just because you have not experienced any problem does not mean that there is no problem. Have you looked at the forum? There are pages and pages of problems associated with 10.04 LTS.

    Understood.

but you see.... there is not as much "Apple bashing" because apple computers actually work how they should!

    windows do not.

I dont think its the "virus" problem soo much, as it is the actual OS.

I never got a single virus on my windows machines.... (besides the actual OS itself) lol
but it NEVER ever ever worked as good as any Ubuntu OS ive ever used. (same goes for my peers).

I agree.. paying for a service/product is not robbery.....
but when you start getting into MS's past.. and their shady business methods.....
it is pretty clear.. they are committing robbery.

If I walked into a store, and there were 3 OS on the table..
MS for free, apple for a few bucks, or Ubuntu for a few more bucks...

I would be walking out with Ubuntu, ( and a few extra dollars *happily*gone from my pocket. [bugs and all], lol)

Whoosh! Antenna understood perfectly. My comment was simply a sarcastic reply to your comment that you had been using Windows 7 for a time and not noticed many problems. What I was saying was, in effect, that just because you have not experienced problems does not mean that there are no problems. Do you even think about what you write?

Again, visit some Windows 7 forums - there are many, many issues that people are having.

On a side note before I get started, that was the worst possible thread title you could have picked to get support. Insulting a product that people are passionately supportive of, then asking for assistance does not a good impression make.

Now, on to your problem. I have seen issues like this being due to video card issues. More specifically older cards that are clogged up with dust. What happens is that the newer screen savers tend to push the cards a bit more. This, along with clogged heat sink fins, cause minor issues that seem to show up in screen savers.

The first thing to check would be under System->Administration->Hardware Drivers. If one is available pick it. You may also want to step back to a different version depending on the card you have (Thinking nvidia here)

Next, crack open your case and see if it needs to be cleaned. If you never have done it before then it is probably a good idea to take a can of compressed air to it. Take it outside first or you will kick that dust into the air.

If that does not help we will need information on the type of computer you have, type of video card, version of Ubuntu (x32 or x64). and if you did an upgrade or clean install.
