    Re: Problems with 10.04 and Toshiba A505 S6005

    Hey guys, I just bought this Toshiba model and got the same problems you all have.

    After some research, I think I've finally gotten all the issues solved.

    My wireless card, the power manager showing the batteries, the usb problems, fan speed, multicore support, webcam, etc
    In other words: Full ACPI Support

    Here is the proof: http://i39.tinypic.com/30vc19l.jpg
    You can see working the temperature monitor applet, the wireless card (without having to install the drivers), the batteries info, etc...

    This is what I did:

    The main problem with this laptop is that the BIOS is buggy, and make some funny stuff with the DSDT tables.

    There is already a patch with a solution for this problem (since March) but hasn't been included in the official kernel yet, so we have to compile our own kernel.

    We are going to use the Ubuntu sources for this, so first of all, install all the dependencies:

    Code:
    sudo apt-get install build-essential libncurses5-dev libncurses5 kernel-package

    Then you need to get the kernel sources with the Ubuntu patches:

    Code:
    sudo apt-get install linux-source-2.6.32
    This is the 2.6.32-21-generic source code, which is based on the official 2.6.32-11 version from kernel.org.

    So when you compile, you will get the "-11" prefix, don't worry about that.

    Now we patch the source and configure it:
    (notice the patch we are going to use is different from this one: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1301101&page=8
    We are using a more updated patch from the kernel developers )

    Code:
    cd /usr/src
    sudo tar xvfj linux-source-2.6.32.tar.bz2
    cd linux-source-2.6.32
    sudo wget 'https://bugzilla.kernel.org/attachment.cgi?id=25669' -O copydsdt.patch
    sudo patch -p1 < copydsdt.patch
    sudo cp /boot/config-2.6.32-21-generic ./.config
    sudo make menuconfig
    Now you will get a menu...

    Select "Load an alternate configuration file"
    ENTER
    EXIT

    (go to: http://www.howtoforge.com/kernel_compilation_ubuntu_p2 for a more explanatory tutorial regarding this)

    Now we compile:

    Code:
    make-kpkg clean
    fakeroot make-kpkg --initrd --append-to-version=-a505 kernel_image kernel_headers
    If you get permission problems, just execute "sudo su" before the 2 previous commands.
    That will take like an hour.
    After that, we will have 2 .deb files in /usr/src, we now install them
    Code:
    cd /usr/src
    sudo dpkg -i linux-headers-2.6.32.11+drm33.2-a505_2.6.32.11+drm33.2-a505-10.00.Custom_i386.deb
    sudo dpkg -i linux-image-2.6.32.11+drm33.2-a505_2.6.32.11+drm33.2-a505-10.00.Custom_i386.deb
    Now we create an initrd file and copy the file to /boot

    Code:
    cd /usr/src/linux-source-2.6.32
    sudo su
    mkinitramfs-kpkg -o initrd.img-2.6.32.11+drm33.2-a505 2.6.32.11+drm33.2-a505
    cp initrd.img-2.6.32.11+drm33.2-a505 /boot
    exit
    And we edit /boot/grub/grub.cfg , adding the following bolded text:
    (you can use sudo gedit /boot/grub/grub.cfg, or your favorite text editor)

    Code:
    menuentry 'Ubuntu, with Linux 2.6.32.11+drm33.2-a505' --class ubuntu --class gnu-linux --class gnu --class os {
            recordfail
            insmod ext2
            set root='(hd0,5)'
            search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set a0fd8215-05f4-4c17-a7af-0d59f88e99b7
            linux   /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.32.11+drm33.2-a505 root=/dev/sda5 ro   quiet splash acpi=copy_dsdt
            initrd /boot/initrd.img-2.6.32.11+drm33.2-a505
    }
    menuentry 'Ubuntu, with Linux 2.6.32.11+drm33.2-a505 (recovery mode)' --class ubuntu --class gnu-linux --class gnu --class os {
            recordfail
            insmod ext2
            set root='(hd0,5)'
            search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set a0fd8215-05f4-4c17-a7af-0d59f88e99b7
            echo    'Loading Linux 2.6.32.11+drm33.2-a505 ...'
            linux   /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.32.11+drm33.2-a505 root=/dev/sda5 ro single
            echo    'Loading initial ramdisk ...'
            initrd /boot/initrd.img-2.6.32.11+drm33.2-a505
    }
    OPTIONAL
    That will be enough to get everything working, but the update-manager tends to modify the grub.cfg each time it gets kernel updates or other things... so, we are going to modify one more file, just not to have to modify the grub.cfg each time.

    We edit the default grub config:

    Code:
    sudo gedit /etc/default/grub
    And again, we add the bolded text...

    Code:
    GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"
    GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="acpi=copy_dsdt"
    Then we update the GRUB Menu
    Code:
    sudo update-grub
    This will reconstruct the grub.cfg with the acpi=copy_dsdt option, but it will add it for all your kernels, including the original one.
    Well, it's not like we are going to use other versions without that option anyway, so...

    Now just reboot the machine and select the new kernel entry from your Grub Boot Menu.

    That's it guys, now your Toshiba a505-s6005 will be 100% functional under Linux

    By the way, if you want to get the temperature monitor, you need to install sensors-applet, hddtemp and acpi-support.
    And to test the webcam, just install a program like cheese (sudo apt-get install cheese)

    P.S.- If you can't even install the distro (black screen or something), that means you have an older version of Ubuntu 10.04 (probably a BETA or a RC version).
    The graphics chip from this laptop model is an intel HD Graphics, and it's supported for Linux since 2.6.33 versions... the Ubuntu Team patched their 2.6.32 version for it to have the drivers working in the FINAL VERSION. So even if you have the latest RC version, it won't work... you need the final release.

    Code:
    Cannot find /lib/modules/2.6.32.11+drm33.2-a505

    Thumbs up Re: Problems with 10.04 and Toshiba A505 S6005

    I also have a Toshiba A505 S6005. I am trying to install Ubuntu 9.10 from the "Ubuntu 9.10 Desktop Edition" CD. I have used the same CD to install it on my PC and I have been using it successfully for the last few months.

    But, unfortunately I am having severe troubles installing it on the Toshiba laptop. Problems:
    - wubi.exe does not run
    - Boots from the CD and the installation procedure stops after selecting the language. Laptop hangs with a black screen.
    - Tried the following but none of them works (same black screen appears) :
    * Ubuntu 9.10 Demo
    * Test for Memory
    * And all the other options that appear on that setup menu

    Did anyone have this problem before? Please help me out.

    You are not doing anything wrong, I forgot a crucial step (installing the compiled kernel before creating the initrd image)
    Also, I've changed this line:

    Code:
    fakeroot make-kpkg --initrd --append-to-version=-a505 kernel_image kernel_headers
    Go back to my previous post, the manual should be fine now.

    You won't be able to get this toshiba model fully working with Ubuntu 9.10.
    The reason is that the i3-330m processor and the intel HD chip are both too new for Ubuntu Karmic.
    You can install it, though... with the ACPI=off option, and then compile a more updated kernel version, but it will be harder than with Ubuntu 10.04

    you sir are awesome! I finally have ubuntu working on my laptop! There was just one thing for this part
    Code:
    sudo cp /boot/config-2.6.32-21-generic .config
    I had to run it as
    Code:
    sudo cp /boot/config-2.6.32-21-generic ./.config
    but other than that this guide is flawless!

    I seriously can not thank you enough. Here is m proof it is working http://imgur.com/j749y.jpg

    I am going to slap a solved tag on this thread.

    Thanks for the corrections. I've updated the guide for the future owners of this model.

    Glad you get it working. I spent hours trying to get my laptop running Ubuntu, since there was no specific guide... it was a hell!!.
    I'm happy I could help other Toshiba505 owners so they don't suffer too much with all this

    Awesome, this guide worked PERFECTLY for me too!

    This should really be added to the "Tutorials and Tips" section as a HOWTO, as this Toshiba is BY FAR the most Linux-unfriendly laptop I've ever seen.
    Running Ubuntu 10.04 on a Toshiba Satellite A505. You will not BELIEVE all the problems I have with it. But hey, that's all part of the fun! Even if fixing something does take hours...

    Re: Problems with 10.04 and Toshiba A505 S6005

    New User, and love this guide, but after doing a clean install of Ubuntu on my a505-s6005 I have run into few discrepancies:

    sudo cp /boot/config-2.6.32-22-generic-pae ./.config
    was what I had to use to get to the point of compiling. Not sure what else has changed and im not sure if I am doing something wrong, or missed a step, will let you know once I get to the installing part.....

    Ok Installed Great..No Problems that I can see

    Now is there a way to make an Installation CD with this patch added??

    This fixed my Toshiba E-205 S1904. I had worked through the other thread listed in this post, but this really worked for me. Everything is working. Startup and Shutdown function keys, and battery icon.
