For me this issue was fixed by mysql 5.1.41-3ubuntu12.6 released in lucid-proposed a couple of hours ago.

    Hello

After taking 6 hours of my (precious) time, finally got it : it was simply a filesize issue : I didn't have any place left on the partition containing the mysql data !

Hope this will help someone here...

open your /etc/mysql/my.cnf file and set your bind address correctly(if it's incorrect) after doing that
    type sudo /etc/init.d/mysql start
if still it doesn't work check whether mysql-server is installed on your machine or not
Hope this will help to others too, who are facing same problem

Recently had the same problem on my Linode box and it got solved by adding hard drive space.

Re: Upstart failing to start MySql on Lucid

    Code:
ERROR 2002 (HY000): Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock' (2)[/QUOTE]
I had exactly the same response to "> mysql start". My disk was full. Freeing just a bit of space did the trick and now it is up and running. No need to tamper anything.

    Thanks and solved

I had the same issue, and it was because the hard drive was 100% full, d'oh.
