9.04 upgrade Size mismatch errors

I've been trying to upgrade my 9.04 server installation, but I keep getting these "Size Mismatch" errors:

E: Unable to fetch some archives, maybe run apt-get update or try with --fix-missing?

I've been googling around trying to find out how to resolve this, to no avail. I am working on a clean install of 9.04 server, and I'm trying to get this setup at work - possibly behind a firewall.

I've run the following commands, also to no avail:

apt-get clean
apt-get update
apt-get upgrade
apt-get dist-upgrade

and everything seems fine until I run dist-upgrade - then I get the size mismatch errors.

Is there anyway to fix this?

did you try with --fix-missing?

Yes,

I forgot to add that to the list of actions. Makes no difference. I've also changed the repository source, removing the "jp." prefix in my /etc/apt/sources.list file.

Also no real effect. What I get is this result:

Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
The following packages have been kept back:
bind9-host dnsutils landscape-common libbind9-40 libdns45 libisc45 libisccc40 libisccfg40 liblwres40
linux-image-server linux-restricted-modules-server linux-server
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 12 not upgraded.

Then when i run apt-get dist-upgrade, the same "Size mismatch" errors occur in the same places.

UPDATE: when I try to apt-get install each of the files (e.g. linux-image-server 2.6.28.18.23) that failed to fetch, I get this message:

E: Couldn't find package 2.6.28.18.23

Is there a missing link somewhere?

Can you install any other programs?
if you need a program to test install

it looks like you can not install anything.

I have been doing some reading on the problem, but I have not found anything that is relevant.

Did you install anything before this problem, like doing an update?

I think that is now due to you removing jp. from the sources address. You should not edit the sources list manually.

I seriously doubt that is the problem. It merely sends requests to different repositories - and in this case, does not change the "Size mismatch" error message.

Especially, since I repeated the whole apt-get sequence of commands from "apt-get clean".

I did some research but I seriously couldn't find anything, you might want to report a bug on launchpad. I cant really help you any further.

Update:

I went ahead and manually added each of the files that were failing to download due to "Size mismatch" errors, in order of appearance. That solved the problem of getting these files and updating my installation of 9.04, but did not solve the "Size mismatch" errors, especially when I tried to upgrade to 9.10.

I then realized that when I previously edited my sources_list file to change the repositories, that I had just deleted the "jp." prefix. I went back in and added "us." to every line that had contained the "jp." prefix, and went through the whole "apt-get clean, apt-get update, apt-get upgrade" cycle, which told me that everything was up to date, and nothing more was needed.

When I tried to do the upgrade, however, I got the same errors, on these files:

Looking around for more hints on "Failed to fetch" and "Size mismatch" errors, I found this site which mentioned clearing out each failed instance from the /var/cache/apt-cacher file.

However, I don't have this file in my /var/cache directory... Wondering what to do next...
