It's OK, everything we know will become obsolete at some time.
Only beef Im having is with the dual monitors on my main comp.
I was so excited for the new 10.04 LTS release to come out, that as soon as it did, I started upgrading all of my laptops, and completely removed Windows XP from my desktop and started a fresh install of Lucid. The reason I was so excited was because Karmic Koala was such a great release. Everything worked on all my computers the way it was supposed to, so I assumed Lucid would be just as good or better. Well, you know what happens when you assume... The new GRUB took several minutes to load from ext4 on computers that started much more quickly before. A bunch of included drivers got dropped in Lucid, envy-ng no longer works in Lucid, because they switched to the ****** open source drivers by default. The most annoying part though was the now very controversial move of the window buttons to the left side. Yes, I know it's just a change of one line of code to move it back to the right, and there are a bunch of scripts floating around the internet to do it for you, but I felt that Karmic was so perfect and I didn't have to go through as much crap, so I cancelled what upgrades I could cancel and restored them back to Karmic. Sadly my Macbook, which was very nicely set up before had already finished the upgrade, so I had to reinstall Karmic on that and follow all my previous procedures to get the programs I wanted, and I did a fresh install of Karmic on my desktop and have everything working that I want. I'll admit, I'm no Linux guru. I've only been messing with it in my free time for about a year and a half now, but I know a nice, easy to set up operating system when I see it, and Karmic in my opinion is the best. It's too bad that wasn't the LTS. I will keep using Karmic. If I need support, I will Google or look on here for answers; it's what I've always done anyway. I've been trying different Ubuntu distributions since late '08 and I finally found one that impressed me enough to replace every Windows installation in my home, and it happens to be 9.10. Someone once said to me "the thing about Linux is, you have to find a distribution and version that works for you and NEVER upgrade, because they're constantly changing ****". I see what he means now.
Clean Install works perfectly, but with last updates can't boot Ubuntu 10.04. On my notebook the system stop in the Grub's "bash-like" screen.
I reinstall the system ans all works well. When I upgrade the system again, the same problem return. How can I boot on my system again?
I Quad boot with Snow/Ubuntu/7/XP and installed grub2 to the ubuntu partition. Now all it says when rEFIt loads the partition is "Error Loading Operating System" I can't remember if I had this problem when I installed Karmic but this is really irritating and can't figure out how to get lucid to boot without messing up my Windows boot systems.
Spoke too soon, as a glitch appeared. I was losing audio after a couple of minutes, any time I tried Flash streaming video. Changed my Nvidia driver from 'newest' to 'recommended,' reinstalled Flash. No change. Finally I disabled my old AC97 standard analog audio card and ran off the on-board audio. Works fine, except being in mono only.
At first it installed flawlessly, then the upgrade notice to kernel-image-2.6.32-22-generic #%#$%% everything. Why?
Installed fine, but window icons on the left, but fixed that after digging about, had to turn off screen savers because of lock ups, evolution still had the usual can not empty deleted mail, fixed now, again by digging around. Overall a good release if you really understand how the software works, but still needs some fixes, not for the casual user
