Re: Share with the community your Lucid Lynx install/upgrade experience

I upgraded this weekend from 9.10 to 10.04. I upgraded using update manager.

The upgrade process reported an error with network manager, but continued to upgrade. upon finishing and reboot, everything seems to be running perfectly normal and no apparent errors with my network manager. (I did vote for flawless upgrade in the poll despite the issue I listed above, since I really did not have to fix anything.)

The process took about 2 hours after it downloaded all it needed.

Looks good and running great. I also quickly found the how to: to move the min-max-close buttons to the right (which is where I prefer and am used to them being)

Re: Share with the community your Lucid Lynx install/upgrade experience

Upgrade itself worked OK with a few dropped packages and restarts - took 4 tries to do. I blame it on the wireless, but that's all I have...

Done this on a netbook, and I got UNR again, and I never liked the UNR to begin with. Now I don't have the second panel, the one I have is useless, and I cannot add the second panel, nor remove anything from the 1-st one, and that is after disabling UNR first, and then uninstalling the packages with synaptic. Right clicking on empty space on the top panel gives me "Help" and "Properties", as well as grayed out "Add to panel", "Add new panel", and something else. I only have about 3 pixels of it to click on, right under and to the left of wireless display. Looks a bit too Mac-ish in icons though. Will probably revert back to Karmic on a netbook at least. I will give it a second shot on a desktop, but I'm gonna use another partition for it though.

Looks absolutely stunning out of the box so to say, possible to backport some of those themes and graphics into Karmic

Re: Share with the community your Lucid Lynx install/upgrade experience

I had two problems (upgrading from 9.10 to 10.04):

    1) The notification icon was a big, red no-entry sign complaining about the /etc/apt/apt.conf.d/99synaptic and a Permission Denied error. I think I've fixed this by making the 99synaptic file readable to all users. The content of the file is extremely tame, but if anyone knows of a reason why this file should not be readable to all, let me know.

    2) The window borders are missing most times the machine boots. The only way I know how to get the borders back is to go into System -> Preferences -> Appearance, then change the visual effects from "None" to "Normal" (or vice versa), after which the window trimming magically reappear. So Compiz is likely to be at fault, but I don't know how to fix this permanently. Any ideas?

    Very smooth upgrade.
Much better than the last one.
My Brother MFC240c scanned using Xsane, without opening a terminal and going to work.(the first upgrade for that) ((simple scan also worked and the scan looked better, crisper and had a more accurate color representation than xsane))

Re: Share with the community your Lucid Lynx install/upgrade experience

Well, I'm reasonably certain that the problems I'm experiencing are directly related to the fact that I am computer illiterate, but here goes.

Followed the instructions from Ubuntu.org on upgrading from Karmic Koala to Lucid Lynx. I had already burned an installation CD but decided against doing a "FRESH" install as opposed to the upgrade option offered through Update Manager.

It took forever. Well, OK, maybe not forever, but I took a nap and woke up an hour and fifteen later and it still wasn't finished. Once it did finish the first issue was it wouldn't boot. It got hung up on the splash screen. (Unresolved) Still happening. Have to do a HARD shut down and then it normally works.

Second issue was with playing games at POGO.com, for which I posted for help in the "General" section of Ubuntu Forums. After reading a load of stuff I went in through "Synaptic Package Manager" and removed the IcedTea Plugin from my package. My games at POGO then loaded and played without incident. )

The other problem I have is that "Evolution" just spontaneously closes without warning or any input from me. If my computer sits idle for say 45 minutes, which is not uncommon at work or at home, and I come back to it Evolution has either already closed or when I maximize the window and attempt to reply, forward, or get mail it just closes.

I am NOT extremely savvy when it comes to CLI operating systems such as Ubuntu Linux, since ALL my experience prior to Karmic was with Mr. Gates products. I am not going to give up on Ubuntu, as I've been enjoying the learning process since October last year! If the problems persist I will try to figure out where my mail files reside on my hard drive, copy them to my external USB HDD, and then flop the good old CD in the drive and boot and install from the CD.

If push comes to shove I'll go back to Karmic as I was completely satisfied with that release and it functioned flawlessly. The Great Ubuntu Powers asked us to share and share I did. I like the feel for Lucid, and I think I could probably get my family to change, but I won't do that until I figure out the glitches.

    Thanks for reading!

Re: Share with the community your Lucid Lynx install/upgrade experience

On my desktop I attempted a clean install (as I always do), and took three hours of fiddling around to get past the out of sync display and install. This was due to the built in NVidia graphics card. Published my workaround on the forums.

On my netbook eeepc 1000H my wireless card (rt2860) does not connect to WPA or WPA2 networks. Hopefully a fix will be out soon

On my wife's Acer AS5732Z-4867 wireless network reception was weak and frequently disconnecting; fixed it by installing linux-backports-modules-wireless-2.6.32-31-generic

Exclamation Re: Share with the community your Lucid Lynx install/upgrade experience

    Mostly it went well.

However, I found that when I download "qcad" it is not visible in the menu (usually under Graphics), so I don't know where to find it. It worked well in 9.10 and earlier Ubuntu.

I would like the "UTC=no" line to be set in /etc/defaults/rcS, that way I don't have to change it manually each install on my thumbdrive... that way the clock is not changed when I boot the system as Windows.

Thank you for the new LTS.

Re: Share with the community your Lucid Lynx install/upgrade experience

I upgraded from 9.10 to 10.04 via the Update Manager. all works fine, I had to fix the minimize, maximize & close buttons (They were after the upgrade on the left side... Who the hell had this "smart" design idea?!). And the Software Center and the Gnome MPlayer frontend looked better in the 9.10 version, too. I've seen no real problems (Applications that stopped working or similar stuff), it was a less abrupt change than from 9.04 or 8.10.
Dear Ubuntu Team, thank you... This release proofs one thing once again:

    Install disk flaky

After I got it installed, it looked good.

But the install disk is flaky, and that will stop some people in their tracks. (Yes, I ran the CD check. No errors.)

If you hit ESC or cursor keys during start up, you see error messages. Hitting ESC at the right time brings up a text menu which includes Try, Install, Check Disk, etc. Hitting the wrong key at the wrong time leaves you hanging blind (black screen). It's quite unstable.

Throughout the installation there are black screen periods that make the system look dead. I discovered by accident that the install might recover if given enough time. The user needs to be kept informed at all times. There should always be some evidence of life, even if it is only an incrementing timer or set of dots. Trying to use graphics too early in the install process is risky. A basic text mode is the most reliable.

If you are really patient and never touch the keyboard during startup, you eventually get a graphical menu with just Try and Install options. Is there any documentation about keypresses you can use during install?

Installing into VirtualBox OSE is very slow and the flakiness is made worse by severe lags in responding to user input. The install seems to work, but when you boot the new install, the window changes shape three times but remains black. It seems dead, but after about 10 minutes, Ubuntu starts. It's rather sluggish, though.

As a user, I would rather see fewer releases, better tested and more stable. Non-technical Ubuntu users (are there any?) are best advised not to attempt any upgrades unless the upgrade has functionality they really need.

In spite of the installation difficulties, what I have seen of installed Lucid (on hardware, not VirtualBox) is good so far.
