Does Disk Usage Analyzer fit the bill?
Applications > Accessories > Disk Usage Analyzer
It shows how much overall is used but dosen't break the down into file type (as does windirstat) which is what I'm looking for.

Or gdmap
It doesn't have a clean up facility like windirstat but it will show the disc usage in a similar way.
Thanks.
Except I'm not sure which color stands for what...LOLcats
I'll figure it out...

hi ubunterooster,
i think my original post #4 was so close to your reply that I missed the fact you are using xubuntu... Not sure if that precludes you from using kdirstat which is the original "windirstat" (perhaps other can confirm that or otherwise.)
Thanks. I'm currently on a nintendo dsi so I can't check now but I'm sure kdirstat will work on xcfe; I also have kde in case I need it (along w/ pretty much every other DE). So thanks again, tilii, for both programs; I can now begin to continue organizing my fathers terribly scrambled drives. :♭

@tilii thank you..
no 'kidirstat' or 'k4dirstat' on Xubuntu 11.10 (oneiric ocelot)...
which i thought was a shame, until we foundmore or less the same.. very useful app.. dunno why not there by default?? Super useful to get a visual of which files/folders are taking up most space. Only 1 package to install, no dependencies, just 1 tiny file.. seems like it should be there by defaultCode:sudo apt-get install gdmap
