It is not just a gnome distribution. It also offers KDE and Xfce. It would make sense for its naming convention to reflect that.

So the names Kubuntu and Xubuntu don't reflect that Ubuntu comes in KDE and Xfce flavors as well?

Its an established OS. To change the name of a distro that has been going for years would be stupid.

Because Kubuntu, Xubuntu, etc. were not started by Canonical; they're simply derivative projects that Canonical has graciously chosen to provide support and resources for. Basically, they ARE MEANT TO be derivatives; Canonical only truly cares about Ubuntu (w/ Gnome) in the long run.

And I'm not surprised that this is coming from someone who can be quoted as saying that Gnome is holding Linux back and is unneeded.

Ubuntu does give preferential treatment to Gnome. Live with it.

Of course they give preferential treatment to Gnome. Ubuntu is a gnome distro.

That's where you're wrong. Ubuntu is most definitely a Gnome distro. Distro is short for distribution, and Gnome is the DE that they distribute. Sure, you can install KDE, Xfce, and others through the repos, but that isn't a part of the official packaged distribution.

Kubuntu, Edubuntu, and Xubuntu all came later as a favor to people who wanted a preconfigured system (there wasn't a Kubuntu for Warty Warthog). But the original Ubuntu has always been Gnome centered, and it always will be.
