According to the Launchpad site, this bug now has a high priority. It has been confirmed that there are some issues with the NVIDIA MCP89 SATA chipset/drivers that control both the HDD and CD/DVD drive.

    Only workarounds for right now:
    1) Install Ubuntu on a USB stick, boot from the USB stick.
    2) Boot the Ubuntu CD from an external CD-ROM drive.
    3) Run Ubuntu in a VM. (not an option for native performance)
I tried installing from a USB stick but that gave me the same error as with the CD/DVD installation...

Sorry if I was not entirely clear. Install Ubuntu ON a USB stick. You will have to do this from another computer likely, or use one of the methods to create a live USB stick from within OS X.

I'm sure this is a long shot, but has anyone tried building and booting a kernel from the 2.6.35 git branch listed in this changelog? There are references to MCP89 in the diff file..

I'm downloading the 2.6.34-git8 patch and will be building a kernel right away

    UPDATE:
Sadly, it doesn't seem to work.

Looks like this bug is kernel wide. This is not simply an Ubuntu issue. Will update with more information when possible.

How did you get FreeBSD 8.0 to work? I tried booting the 64bit ISO DVD and it didn't work. Any suggestions?
