firefox forgets, ignores search, tomboy won't open, youtube, etc.

These problems started yesterday, and I have no idea why.
System76 with Hardy

When I click the red button at the top right, the button AND the entire top panel dissappears, and no way to shut down properly or logout / switch user etc.

Tomboy won't open when i click it under Applications nothing happens

The button near the right that shows your internet strength...it no longer starts at startup, making it more difficult to connect

Firefox 3 ....

forgets my tabs even if I ask to save them
instead i get 2 tabs the first of which says my firefox is old?
back button is useless, immediately forgets my last page
the mini search box on right... google, yahoo, wiki etc doesnt do anything
can't log in to ubuntuforums using firefox, the login box does nothing
Youtube vids only play about 20-30 seconds, then forever pause

This is what I noticed so far. How these problems happened all at once I don't know, but they are frustrating. I hope someone can make some sense of all this.
