    Grub problem

    HI so i had Ubuntu installed,,,i install Windows 7,,and now for some reason,,the grub menu will not boot up,,it loads directly into windows,,how can i change that?? i made sure that the ubuntu partition wasnt touched,,,does this mean i messed up? and now its gone?i need to boot back into ubuntu,,any ideas????

    Nope, all it means is that freaking Windows 7 over-wrote your Bootloader. Hit the GRUB2 link in my signature to see how to reinstall your bootloader for GRUB.

    Just be sure to use the correct instructions for your version of grub. Grub legacy is 0.97 and grub2 with Karmic is 1.97 beta4, Lucid will be 1.98.

    OK so i kinda get what to do,,ut how do i know which grub version i need?

    What version of Ubuntu did you install?

    Anything before 9.10 is Grub Legacy, the old one.

    9.10 or after is Grub 2.

    To know the version of grub you have run;

    If ranch hands command tell you this ,grub-install (GNU GRUB 1.97~beta4),
    its grub 2 and you need this.

    well i have a grub propblem too i got the black screen of death on my ubuntu 9.10
    i booted up normal and then it makes the drum sound the mouse just shows up but the screen is black
    i know i can go t o grub menu on boot and change to recovery but it wont work ive tries loading and pushing esc but nothing it goes straight load and dark screen comes back ??? can anyone help me
    i need to be able to get to grub menu .....

    If you are using the newer version of grub try the shift button as it will work better.
