Re: Welcome to the Forums - Introduce yourself here

Hello everybody. I'm in the South-East corner of England and have been using Ubuntu (10.10 Maverick) exclusively since March or April this year.

    Asus P6X58D-E Motherboard
    i7 Processor
    6GB RAM
    300 GB hard drive
    1 TB second hard drive
    2 DVD re-writers
Ubuntu ONLY - no dual-boot or $eattle $pyware for me!

I still struggle with a few things, but I'll get there. I like the way everything (meaning software) is either pre-installed or just a few mouse clicks away.

The thing I don't like about this forum is that it's too popular, with hundreds of pages on each thread, making it difficult to find what I'm looking for.

At least it's better than the newbies' forum at www.ubuntux.org/, where there seems to be one resident knowledgeable person and hardly anyone else, so I can't really complain.

Re: Welcome to the Forums - Introduce yourself here

I never actually really introduced myself. So, a year late, here goes:

I am a student (not saying where). My nickname is "Near." This was inspired by Nia (Near in the English translation) from Death Note. I always get weird looks from new students, until they realize it's a nickname.

I generally use Debian or Debian-based systems. My favorite window manager is Openbox, and my favorite panel is tint2.

I can speak and read Russian fluently, as I grew up doing so. My spelling, however, is terrible, and I can't type in it.
I am steadily learning Japanese, although I have a very long way to go.

I am a command line obsessive person, and use it for practically everything nowadays. (Alpine for email, Vim for documents, etc.)
I also have a tendency to mess with my electronics. I have a rooted Android running CM7.1, a HP TouchPad running CM7.1 A1, and a Sansa Fuze running Rockbox.

    My laptop:
    - Toshiba T235D-S1360
    - AMD Turion™ II Neo Dual-Core Processor K625
    - 320GB HDD (5400rpm)
    - 4GB DDR3 RAM
    - 13.3" 16:9 1366x768
    - ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4225
    - CrunchBang Statler

    My desktop:
    - Custom
    - 2.2Ghz AMD processor (can't remember model)
    - 20GB Seagate HDD (3200rpm I think) [It works! ]
    - 4GB DDR3 RAM
    - 4:3 15" Acer monitor (can't remember res)
    - Integrated graphics chip
    - Ubuntu 10.04

hi - this thread is great! makes the whole experience so very human!
i am eszter, have been using linux (xubuntu 10.10) for a couple months. i found xubuntu so user friendly that when i bought my new laptop that came with OpenSuSe, i removed it and installed Xubuntu...
i am a complete outsider, am a simple sociolinguist and have no programming special powers like most of you do but i am willing to be the dumb sidekick and learn from you all!

Re: Welcome to the Forums - Introduce yourself here

    Hi every one,

I want to introduce myself, as I just discovered this thread (though I'm member since June).
I'm a student at University Utrecht, Netherlands, and have been using Ubuntu for one and a half year now.
I think of moving to Ubuntu Studio, since I'd love to experience with software synthesizers. But I still have to fight some things that cause Ubuntu Studio not to work.

I further use Vim and Vimium+Chromium as my loyal software package. What does a man need apart from a good editor and a browser? (And Ubuntu, obviously)

    Cheers!
Vim - Comfortable text editing and coding
    vim-autoformat - a code-formatting plugin for vim supporting various languages - https://github.com/Chiel92/vim-autoformat
Vimperator - Fast browsing using keyboard only

Smile New guy on the forums.

Heya Ubuntu peeps! This site is nice so far, and so is the version (Ubuntu 9) of the the OS I've used so far. Somewhat of a Linux noob, play around a little bit with Puppy and recently Ubuntu every now and then, and considering the OS as a viable option for PC custom-builds.

    Anyways, how's it goin' guys?

Re: New guy on the forums.

Why are you using an out of date version?

    Ubuntu is up to 11.10.

Re: New guy on the forums.

Because it was the version that was nearby at the time. Also, I think it's about the same age as Windows Vista so -shrug-.

Also, if I end up using Ubuntu in the future, it'll be the latest release at that time. Other Linux considerations: Crunchbang, Puppy, and Debian.
